More on youth leaving the church

Both here and on Adventist Today there was discussion on the claim that Adventists youth do not leave over doctrines. A statement that is clearly false on it’s face since of course there are Adventist youth who leave over doctrines and it only takes one to make the statement false. But numerous Adventists still held to that idea regardless of the common sense answer that of course there are Adventist youth and adults who leave over doctrines. So I thought I would supply some information from two books that we can read most of at Google books.

First from from page 35 of Why our teenagers leave the church: personal stories from a 10-year study  By Roger L. Dudley

“Since I believe that my estimate of 50 percent inactivity for those we are not able to contact is conservative indeed, it seems reasonable to believe that at least 40 percent to 50 percent of Seventh-day Adventist teenagers in North America are essentially leaving the church by their middle 20s. This figure may well be higher. Some will return eventually (perhaps a fifth of the dropouts), but, of course, more may also leave. This study does not provide data to suggest what may happen beyond the mid-20s.”

Page 38-39 dealing with those who remained in the church since it is difficult to gauge those who left the church but the conclusion is suspect:

Young Adults and the Fundamental Beliefs

“We did not ask about all 27 fundamental beliefs, but several that define key elements of Adventism. While correct belief is not all there is to being an Adventist, it is certainly core. Without our distinctive message, there is little reason to remain in our particular faith community, especially if friendship ties are broken.”

I am guessing that it is here in this analysis of the survivors in the Adventist church that the myth of youth not leaving because of doctrines comes from. This being the source for the sentence quote that publications like the Adventist Review can use.

“…The feeling here seems to be not so much a rejection of Adventism but that claims for “true church” smack of pride and exclusiveness. Much of the drop in agreement on other items has been because of uncertainty rather than disbelief, especially on the heavenly sanctuary item, where 31 percent were uncertain. Disbelief in Adventist doctrine does not appear to be a major cause of dropout for youth and young adults.”

It is that last sentence that has taken on a life of its own. The conclusion taken from the comments on a survey of Adventists still in the church; that being that half of the group that is still in the church and communicating with the surveys. But not a survey of those who have actually left the church…the ones we are trying to understand.

Continuing on page 41 on the 11,000 Adventists in the Valuegenesis study:

“…With this younger group, once again temperance and Sabbath issues were highly supported; wine, unclean meats, and sexual behavior were moderately supported; and the “bottom four” were weakly supported. In that study the acceptance rate was jewelry, 39 percent; rock music, 26 percent; dancing, 23 percent; and movies, 19 percent. All four had more in disagreement than in agreement, with nearly two thirds disagreeing on watching movies. It seems almost certain that these four standards will not hold in the near future of the church.”

When reading this we have to wonder what the author sees as a difference between a standard and a doctrine? Unfortunately many people don’t realize they are the same thing. That is a teaching of the church as its standards and beliefs.

On page 42 dealing with the importance of religious faith:

“… This may indicate that contemporary young adults tend to view religious faith apart from institutional commitment and, indeed, the comments introduced in another chapter tend to bear this out. It may also suggest that inactive young adults may be open to fresh approaches to religious faith.”

Adventist doctrine has taught the institutional view of religious faith, but that is less important to the young adults, again a disagreement with doctrine.

Finally here is a brief section on page 273 from Getting it right: a power-packed resource for Adventist youth leaders  By General Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists. Youth Dept. Chapter author Barry Gane:

“A simple factor analysis of the data revealed five main factors [Valuegenesis results from Sough Pacific Division]:

control: not allowed to think for self, problem with the doctrines, and emphasis on nonessentials

lack of caring

lack of meaning and purpose

personal integrity

control; discipline, family problems, too restrictive”

There is simply no around the idea that doctrinal issues are related to the loss of youth and adults in the Adventist church. Let’s start being realistic for a change. Read more at cafesda.blogspot.com

Google Will Rat You Out to the Feds for $25

Google receives "tens of thousands" of requests each year from the government to turn over user data, and it complies any it deems legitimate. But the information comes at a cost: 25 bucks per head.

According to documents obtained by privacy researcher Christopher Soghoian under the Freedom of Information Act, Google charges the Feds $25 per account for surveillance services. (No word on if Google displays targeted ads alongside the data it turns over.) Yahoo charges $29, while Microsoft lets government spooks spy on their users for free. Most domestic wiretapping requests come from the DEA, so it's best not to do your drug-dealing via Gmail.

This is a bargain compared to other types of communications spying. According to Wired, cable provider Comcast charges $1,000 for a month of wiretapping. Still, it's all a lot cheaper than parking a van outside your house.

Kryptos Artist Launches Website to Receive Solutions

Start your engines, Kryptos fans. Artist Jim Sanborn, the creator of the CIA’s Kryptos sculpture, has launched his new website which he built in conjunction with a much-anticipated clue he’s scheduled to release in a New York Times story this weekend.

The site Kryptos Clue appeared this week. It’s meant to provide an automated way for people to contact Sanborn with their proposed solutions to the puzzle. The site consists of a single page with an online form for solvers to submit the first 10 characters of their proposed solution to the puzzle.

Sanborn created the cipher sculpture in 1990 for CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, and plans to release a new clue to help puzzle detectives solve the last 97 characters of his masterpiece. The new clue is to be revealed to mark the 20th anniversary of the sculpture, which was dedicated Nov. 3, 1990.

It will be the first clue Sanborn has revealed in four years, after he corrected a typo in his sculpture in 2006 to keep crypto detectives from being derailed in their search for solutions.

Sanborn wouldn’t disclose the clue to Threat Level but said only cryptically that it will “globalize” the sculpture. Asked if this meant it would take the sculpture off the CIA grounds and out of the United States, he conceded it would.

“I personally think it’s a significant clue,” he said. “I’m throwing it out there. It just makes that many fewer characters people have to figure out.”

The 12-foot-high, verdigrised copper, granite and wood sculpture is inscribed with four encrypted messages, three of which have been solved. The sculpture’s theme is intelligence-gathering (Kryptos is Greek for “hidden”). Three of the four have already been cracked, but the last one — consisting of just 97 characters — has confounded amateur and professional cryptographers for 20 years.

Sanborn has been contacted over the years by numerous people who believed they’d solved the puzzle. Many of the solutions they proposed were wildly off-base. He told Threat Level that with the launch of his new site, anyone who thinks they’ve solved the last section will have to submit what they believe are the first 10 characters of the final 97 before he will respond.

IHS Jesuit Monogram: Seminary of Saint-Nicolas-du-Chardonnet, Paris

Jesuit Temporal Coadjutor “Eliphas Levi” became a priest but was “thrown out” for failure to keep his “vow of chastity.”   More valuable as a “Jesuit of the Short Robe,” Constant/Levi went on to provide a most productive life of evil for the Company of Jesus.  Becoming the Order’s most renowned Magician and Occultist of the 19th Century, Constant/Levi wrote The History of Magic and was well known to the “Pontifex Maximus” of Jesuit/Illuminatized Scottish-Rite Freemasonry in America, Albert Pike.  Indeed, both Constant/Levi and Pike were contemporaries, both connected to the Jesuit Order!

Constant/Levi understood there was an unchanging essence of the occult, Satan’s religion of Mystery Babylon (Revelation 17), Mystery Babylon being the city of Rome seated on seven hills ruling over the kings of the earth (17:18).  Of that essence, Constant/Levi wrote in the opening lines of his Transcendental Magic: Its Doctrines and Ritual:

“Behind the veil of all the hieratic and mystical allegories of ancient doctrines, behind the darkness and strange ordeals of all initiations, under the seal of all sacred writings, in the ruins of Nineveh or Thebes, on the crumbling stones of old temples and on the blackened visage of the Assyrian or Egyptian sphinx, in the monstrous or marvelous paintings which interpret to the faithful of India the inspired pages of the Vedas, in the cryptic emblems of our old books on alchemy, in the ceremonies practised at reception by all secret societies, there are found indications of a doctrine which is everywhere the same and everywhere carefully concealed.”

Of this very same universal doctrine common to all secret societies of all pagan nations throughout the ages, the wicked theosophist Madame Blavatsky agreed.  She expressed this belief in both of her works considered classics among occultists, The Secret Doctrine and Isis Unveiled.  Bible-believing Protestant Englishman of the 19th Century Alexander Hislop stated the same when he declared in his epic masterpiece, The Two Babylons; Or The Papal Worship: Proved to be the Worship of Nimrod and His Wife (1916), page 120:

“. . . the Babylonian Messiah whose tragic death, and subsequent restoration to life and glory, formed the cornerstone of ancient paganism.”

And where is the headquarters of world paganism today?  Again, Hislop tells us on pages 2-3:

Rome is in very deed the Babylon of the Apocalypse; . . . her priesthood and their orders, have all been derived from ancient Babylon; and, finally, that the Pope himself is truly and properly the lineal representative of Belshazzar.”

Thus, the Jesuit Alphonse Louis Constant, disguised as a Jew— “Eliphas Levi,” furthered the ancient mystery religion of Babylon, the essential religion of the Jesuit Papacy.  (On his deathbed, he expired a Roman Catholic, receiving “Last Rites” from a priest—most likely a Jesuit priest!)  The end of that Roman pagan system is to be the final pope of Rome, murdered and reborn from the dead to be “Tammuz,” or “Horus,” or “Jupiter,” or “Mithras,” or just plainly, the Antichrist/Man Beast of Revelation 13! The Antichrist, a god-man (murdered and risen from the dead to be possessed by Satan as was the risen Horus possessed by Set) will be pagan man’s “Desire of All the Ages,” the culmination of Satan’s “Mystery of Iniquity” (II Thessalonians 2:7).
