A self-described pimp who recruited a 16-year-old girl on MySpace then rented her out as a prostitute through escort websites was sentenced Monday to 12½ years in prison for sex trafficking of a minor.
Marvin Chavelle Epps, 24, came to law enforcement’s attention in 2008 when a federal vice task force working a sting spotted him outside a Super 8 motel in Sacramento, California, with the girl, who was “wearing a tight red shirt, very short miniskirt and 4-inch, high-heel shoes,” wrote Sacramento Police detective Jeff Morris, in a court affidavit. “The minor had acne which was consistent with a teenager’s acne.”
In chat logs later recover by police, Epps described the ease of using sites like myRedBook and Craigslist to broker women. “I don’t put girls on the blade,” he wrote an associate. “It’s Y2K pimpin’.”
“Get some professional, beautiful, elegant, glamor shots, put ‘em on these escort websites, and her phone gone slap,” Epps wrote.
The case is part of what law enforcement and child-protection officials have described as an alarming trend that sees pimps increasingly using social networking sites to recruit minors into prostitution, then renting them out through paid online sex ads. Washington, D.C., man Christopher Tyrone Young was sentenced last June to 17½ years for recruiting a 17-year-old Florida girl over MySpace and luring her to Las Vegas by promising to make her a “star.”

In Epps’ case, he met the girl — identified by the initials S.M. in court records — on MySpace in late September 2008, and immediately began trying to persuade her to travel to Sacramento, 50 miles from her home in Stockton, to work for him as a prostitute. Chat logs filed in the case indicate that S.M. had previously posted ads on adult websites, but prosecutors claim there’s no evidence that she’d gone out on a call before meeting Epps.
Within weeks of their MySpace meeting, the girl had relocated to Sacramento and moved into a cheap motel room with Epps, who used role play to teach her how to answer phone calls from prospective johns, and took her to a tattoo parlor to get his street name inked onto her arm. She began appearing on adult escort websites Oct. 7, 2008, with photos, measurements and a menu of sexual services.
She was soon booking three to five engagements a day, and she earned between $9,000 and $10,000 total for Epps, according to the government.
Epp’s sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Frank C. Damrell Jr. in Sacramento. Epps faced a statutory minimum of 10 years for the sex-trafficking charge. The government had sought at least 15 years, arguing that Epps deserved a higher sentence for taking a leadership role in a crime.
In a plea deal with Epps, prosecutors dropped a child-pornography charge stemming from a video seized at Epps’ arrest, in which S.M. is seen performing a sex act on him.

The scam goes like this: The grandma calls the Department of Child and Family Services and states that the unemployed daughter is not capable of caring for these children. DCFS agrees and states that the child or children will need to go to foster care.
The grandma then volunteers to be the foster parent, and thus receives a check for $1500 per child per month in Illinois. Total yearly income: $144,000 tax-free, not to mention free healthcare (Medicaid) plus a monthly card entitling her to free groceries, etc, and a voucher for 250 free cell phone minutes per month. This does not even include WIC [Welfare for "Women, Infants and Children"] and other welfare programs. Indeed, grandma was correct in that her fertile daughter is the “breadwinner” for the family.

Three high-profile Tea Party-backed Senate candidates who disputed the constitution's first amendment all lost. Coincidence?

Tuesday's midterm election was the expected bloodbath for Democrats in the House, which Republicans took back with a commanding margin. But the GOP fell well short of its ambition to recapture the Senate as well. And despite the triumphalism of the Tea Party movement in the midterms, it could well be that the two parties would be now be tied in the Senate – if not for the Tea Party's attraction to candidates with religious fundamentalist streaks.
Three Republican nominees, in particular, Christine O'Donnell of Delaware, Sharron Angle of Nevada and Ken Buck of Colorado – all self-identified as having strongly Christian-informed politics – made explicit attacks during the runup to the midterm elections on the separation of church and state, one of America's most cherished founding principles. Which may or may not be coincidental: all three were defeated last week in races where Republicans had strong advantages and were otherwise well poised for victory.
"I disagree strongly with the concept of separation of church and state. It was not written into the Constitution," said Buck at a forum for Republican Senate candidates. The first amendment, he argued, "doesn't mean that we need to have a separation between government and religion". Angle, for her part, labelled "the tenet of the separation of church and state" an "unconstitutional doctrine" – and she refused to disavow or amend the remarks when pressed in an interview this summer. And O'Donnell asked her opponent during a nationally televised debate: "Where in the constitution is separation of church and state?" When he answered, she responded: "That's in the first amendment?"
Although the exact words don't appear in the constitution, the supreme court has regularly affirmed that the first amendment establishes a clear wall between the two. The first amendment of the constitution begins: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion…"
According to surveys, the official Republican candidates those three defeated in the primaries – Mike Castle in Delaware, Sue Lowden in Nevada, and Jane Norton in Colorado – would all have been in solid shape to win on 2 November, had they been their party's nominees. But the Christian trio – who nonetheless proclaimed their fervent dedication to constitutional principles – had strong support from above.Sarah Palin, the Tea Party movement's spiritual leader, rejected the notion that "God should be separated from the state". Conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh also insisted that "the first amendment says absolutely nothing about the separation of church and state."

"I personally wonder if they're discussing the US constitution or the constitution of some other planet," Barry Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, told me. "Because they clearly don't understand it." As if to prove the point, Tea Party-backed Republican House candidate Glen Urquhart had attacked separation of church and state as a "liberal" concept invented by Adolf Hitler – it was actually Thomas Jefferson. Urquhart failed to get elected also.
The enthusiasm of Tea Partiers motivating the conservative base surely boosted GOP victories in the House (they comprised 40% of Tuesday's electorate and voted Republican by a margin of 86% to 11%). But the religious radicalism and constitutional revisionism of several of the movement's most high-profile hopefuls have, by all indications, contributed to their party's failure to capture three vital Senate seats.
A recent study by the Public Religion Research Institute underscores the religious component in the new conservative activism. Fifty-five percent of self-identified Tea Partiers said they believe "America has always been and is currently a Christian nation." And almost half the movement is concerned that public officials "don't pay enough attention to religion". More striking still, religious influence in political life was more important to Tea Party members than it was to those who identified simply as "Christian conservative". Needless to say, the survey found the general public far more sceptical about the role of religion in politics.
Steve Benen, a writer for the Washington Monthly and an expert on church-state separation, said the nomination of non-secular candidates to high national office is not unprecedented, given the religious right's influence, but that the extent of it this cycle was "pretty unusual". "The hostility for church-state separation was always there," Benen told me. "But the GOP was generally uncomfortable with trashing a basic American principle that most of the country recognised and valued."
This episode's encouraging lesson for Americans who still respect the constitution is a good one: even when it's under assault by candidates enjoying strong institutional momentum, even in an electoral cycle dominated by fear and irrationality, people didn't and won't tolerate the weakening of a vital American principle.

Using viral gene insertion and regulatory proteins, researchers turned adult human skin cells directly into adult human blood cells, without first returning them to a fully pluripotent state. Steve Mirsky reports

One of the dreams of biomedical scientists is to be able to transform adult cells into other kinds of cells. And thus avoid some of the ethical concerns of working with embryonic stem cells. Now a research team from McMaster University in Ontario has announced that they’ve been able to transform human skin cells into blood cells. The work was published online on November 7th by the journal Nature. [Eva Szabo et al., "Direct conversion of human fibroblasts to multilineage blood progenitors"]
Other research in this area has required that cells of one type first be returned to a more generally undifferentiated stem cell state, which can introduce fresh problems. Once there, the cell is then turned into the type of tissue the researchers seek. But in this case, the scientists avoided the middleman cell. The skin was changed directly into what appears to be functional adult human blood cells. The technique involves gene insertion by a virus vector and exposure to numerous regulatory proteins.
The cells have not been tested in humans to see if they’re truly indistinguishable from the home-grown kind. But the research is another step in the effort to create needed cell types from easily available ones.

York City Police: Parents hid 5 children from the world
It was seven years ago that child social workers, acting on an anonymous tip, first tried to confirm the existence of young siblings purportedly living in squalor and secrecy in York City.
"No one knew they existed," York City Detective First Class Dana Ward said. "We don't even know their true ages."
York County Children and Youth Services tried again in 2007 to find the children, and once again in 2009, without success. After their third attempt, they notified the child-abuse unit of York City Police, according to court documents.
"They had the children locked up in the house," the detective said. "We can't just bust in the door."

found the children.There are five of them now, ranging in age from about 2 to 13 years old, all the children of Sinhue A. Johnson and Louann E. Bowers, according to court documents.
The children are now in foster care, and their parents are in York County Prison, charged with child endangerment.
Court documents state the children aren't at their expected education levels and there are possible mental-health issues with some of them.
They have no birth certificates, were never enrolled in school, never received medical care or vaccinations and had no documentation to prove they existed, police said; no records of home-schooling exist either.
'Squalor': For years, they lived in squalor at 734 S. Duke

to find the children, fled that building in July 2009, officials said. Owned by Johnson's sister, the building was condemned in July 2009 by York City, according to Ward.

was also there. She refused to answer questions about her children, but did provide their names, court documents state.Ward tried to speak with the children, but they told him they weren't permitted to talk about their home and family, according to documents. All five children were taken into protective custody by Children and Youth workers and remain in foster care, Ward said.
Kids OK: "They're doing well," Children and Youth caseworker Jenna Enterline told District Judge Ronald Haskell Jr. during Johnson's preliminary hearing Thursday.
Four siblings are in one foster home, she said; the eldest is in a separate foster home.
"I believe the children's quality of life has greatly improved," Ward said. "They're
in school now. They've gotten their vaccinations and their dental care. ... It was very obvious their education level was way below where it should be."Johnson, 45, and Bowers, 33, are each charged with five counts of child endangerment, one count for each child. They remain in York County Prison, Johnson on $50,000 bail and Bowers on $40,000 bail.
They also are charged with carrying a firearm without a license in an unrelated incident, court records state, and Johnson has a third case in which he is charged with theft of leased property.
Trial ahead: On Thursday, Bowers waived her right to a preliminary hearing in the child-endangerment case, which is now headed to trial in York County Court. The judge determined
enough evidence exists in Johnson's child-endangerment case for him to stand trial as well.Both are scheduled for court arraignment Dec. 3.
Triscari testified that when she tried to make contact with the Johnson family at 734 S. Duke St. on July 1, 2009, no one would answer the door, although she could hear the voices of a man, a woman and at least one child inside.
Eventually, Johnson came out and began yelling at her, she said.
"He told me I would never see the children," Triscari testified.
'Covered in filth': She said she and Ward returned to the home the next day, but Johnson refused to speak with them. Triscari testified she and Ward returned a few hours later with a court order, but the family
was gone."Everything was in complete disarray, covered in filth," Ward said of the home's interior. "It appeared the entire family was residing in a second-floor room."
The building's other rooms were uninhabitable because of clutter and structural deficiencies, he said.
In the room where the family allegedly lived, Ward found children's clothing, dishes, pots and pans and a kerosene heater that was apparently used to cook on, he said. He also found one double bed and a set of bunk beds.
Water source? In another room, he found sheets of plastic hung to catch rain that leaked through the ceiling, Ward said. Rainwater that collected in the plastic sheets was funneled into buckets, he said.
"It appears that's how they were getting water," Ward said, as there was no water service to the building.
It would be nearly two more months before Triscari and Ward found the children at the motel room.
Enterline testified she has been unable to find birth certificates, school records or medical records for the children in Pennsylvania. She said the parents told her the children were born in Washington, D.C., but that they couldn't remember or didn't know the name of the hospitals.
"They don't think they did anything wrong," Ward said of Johnson and Bowers.
Religion cited: The detective said they are citing religious reasons for not having the children enrolled in school.
"They claim it's a religion they're involved with," he said, adding he was unable to find any reference to a religion with the name Johnson and Bowers gave.
"But we're not concerned with the motive," he said. "We're concerned that the children have been deprived of education and health care."
Ward, who has investigated crimes against children for nearly 17 years, said cases with similar circumstances are rare.
"There are issues all the time, but never this many children for this long a period, with complete isolation from everything," he said. "Neighbors reported they never saw the children outside, and no one knew they existed."
Denies allegations: Johnson told The York Dispatch he did not endanger his children.
He said birth certificates do exist for them, but he refused to say in what state. He also maintains the children never lived at 734 S. Duke St.
"They was never found there at that house," Johnson said. "The kids didn't live in that house. They lived out of state."
Johnson declined to discuss his religion.

“Suddenly trees, houses and all things in the village were sucked into the sea and nothing was left,” said Joni Sageru after a tsunami that slammed into her island off western Indonesia.
More than 430 people were killed, and 88 still missing after a 7.5 magnitude earthquake and tsunami destroyed villages and towns along the cost of some outlying islands of western Indonesia. Rescue teams “believe many, many of the bodies were swept to sea.”
On the same day Mount Merapi erupted, killing at least 38 and leaving about 70,000 people homeless. The twin disasters. Mount Merapi has erupted three times within two weeks.
Along with the 33 people killed by a volcano that erupted Tuesday more than 800 miles to the east in central Java, the number of dead from the twin disasters has now topped 400. Mount Merapi began rumbling again Thursday after a lull that allowed mourners to hold a mass burial for its victims. There were no reports of new injuries or damage.
The double catastrophes in different parts of the country, has severely testing Indonesia’s emergency response network.
Some still wept for lost loved ones as they lay on straw mats or sat on the floor, waiting for medics to treat injuries such as cuts and broken limbs. Outside, some rescuers wore face masks as they wrapped corpses in black body bags.
Residents from Kinahrejo, Ngrangkah and Kaliadem — villages that were devastated in Tuesday’s blast — crammed into refugee camps. Officials brought cows, buffalo and goats down the mountain so that villagers wouldn’t try to go home to check on their livestock.
Thousands attended a mass burial for 26 of the victims six miles from the base of the volcano. Family and friends wept and hugged one another as the bodies were lowered into the grave in rows.
