Nigerian televangelist and Pastor Chris Okotie stands by the inflammatory comments he made during a recent church service in which he claimed that "all Catholics will go to hell" and called the pope "an Anti-Christ', among other things. The controversial preacher's remarks were widely reported online by Nigerian media and swiftly rebuked by religious and nonreligious readers.
PMNewsNigeria.com reports:
Fifty-five year old Okotie, while preaching in his Household of God Church in Ikeja area of Lagos, western Nigeria, said the Catholic church is "a counterfeit church set up by Satan" and that Catholics "bow to idols and crucify Jesus every Sunday when they eat bread claiming they are eating Jesus' body."
"They are not Christians and have never been," Okotie told a stunned congregation.
"They don't know Jesus. They believe that when they eat bread on Sundays, they are eating the body of Jesus. It's ritual," Okotie said.
He said Pope Francis is an Anti-Christ who does the job of the devil and that time is fast approaching when the Catholic church will pledge allegiance to Satan.
"The pope is an Anti-Christ and the Catholic church will soon declare for Satan. This is the end of times," Okotie erupted.
Okotie reportedly also took swipes at T.B. Joshua, another popular Nigerian Christian minister and self-declared prophet, called the Synagogue Church of all Nations (SCOAN) founder a "son of the devil."

The controversial Christian minister, once a highly successful recording artist and aspiring politician, reportedly called on members of his Household of God Church to evangelize their Catholic neighbors in an effort to "rescue" them.

Okotie, who made the troubling remarks during a Sunday, Dec. 1 service, apparently confirmed on Wednesday that he stood by his sermon, writing on Twitter, "Re- Catholicism: Truth is bitter. It lacks saccharine delights."

Okotie's comments have understandably shocked Nigerians, as the African continent's most populous country is more than 40 percent Christian, with Roman Catholics numbering about 20 million.

"Judge not, that ye may not be judged. For every idle word men speak will stand against them in judgment," wrote one reader named Tari commenting on the PM News Nigeria story.

Another reader, identified as Martin, wrote: "I want to state emphatically that it is very unfortunate that 'Pastor' Chris Okotie is causing this kind of controversy on the basis of Mary the Mother of Jesus, and also the Mother of the Church, (whether) you like it or not."

Daisy, a reader on another website, declared, "I am really not one to comment on religious matters but this one is really pissing me off. Who gave this COW the right to judge another person or church?

Is he God? Why (can't) he just concentrate on the people that choose to follow him?"

"Chris Okotie a politician calling himself a pastor…pastor my behind…he is very stupid wherever he is right now," wrote an irate reader named Grace, a self-identified Catholic.

Hundreds of other readers across Nigerian media expressed anger and disappointment at Pastor Okotie's inflammatory remarks, while many simply dismissed him in light of his failed prophecies about becoming the country's president.

Nigeria's Leadership newspaper quoted one Catholic man who agreed that Okotie should be ignored.

"What does the Rev. Okotie know about God, Christianity and the Bible? The Bible condemns divorce and polygamy but that is exactly what Okotie practices," said Paul Chukwudima. "Who made him a judge over the church and other children and servants of God? He is not fit to be called a man of God. What is the difference between him and those he is condemning and judging?"

The controversial charismatic preacher is also known for manning the pulpit with "enforcement," or body guards surrounding him. During the Dec. 8 service at his Household of God Church, when Okotie hosted the annual GRACE ceremony help raise funds for local charities, visibly armed guards were on full display.

The unmarried twice-divorced preacher has run for the Nigerian presidency twice but lost both times, despite claiming he had felt moved by God to submit his candidacy. Okotie founded his Pentecostal congregation in 1987 and has said during interviews that he was initially led to the ministry after "Jesus appeared to [him] when I [he] was three years old." The Household of God Church is one of Nigeria's largest and attracts an estimated 8,000 worshippers weekly.

It's a felony in some states owning a BB gun!

BB gun control: In New Jersey, kids’ rite of passage could mean felony

by

87756047Not only could you “shoot your eye out, kid,” you might also go to jail for owning that BB gun in certain states.

New Jersey and other jurisdictions make little or no distinction between Daisy’s classic Red Ryder BB gun immortalized in the film “A Christmas Story,” and real guns. They must be registered and are subject to the same laws as any firearms.

“In all honesty, kids who are charged are looking at mandatory jail time,” said New Jersey attorney William Proetta, adding that under the state’s Graves Act, a conviction could lead to prison time. “The only defense is to request a waiver but if that’s not granted, young kids can get a felony charge and their lives are basically over.”

Virginia, which treats the rite-of-passage toys as firearms if they are used during criminal conduct, and other municipalities also heavily regulate BB guns. But New Jersey goes the farthest, according to Proetta.

New Jersey’s strict Graves Act gun law covers possession of a BB gun right alongside serious gun control measures outlawing sawed-off shotguns, filing serial numbers off of guns or using firearms to commit crimes. Violating the act can bring a minimum three-year prison term and steep fines.

And the law is enforced. As recently as October, a man was arrested in New Jersey for shooting an airsoft gun at a rubber duck for target practice, in his own yard. Idyriss Thomas, 22, was arrested in Glassboro, N.J., after police responded to multiple 911 calls from neighbors who reported seeing a man with a gun. Once police determined the gun was unlicensed, Thomas was taken to jail and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon. His family posted a $2,500 bond.

“I didn’t realize that what I had in my hand would cause the events that happened today,” Thomas told Philadelphia’s WPVI. “I had the airsoft gun in my hand, playing with it, taking shots at a rubber ducky – not harming anybody.”

Proetta said that depending which county in New Jersey a hearing is held in, a judge will issue a waiver on the Graves Act, or allow charges to be downgraded. But they don’t have to.

“Courts will work closely on each case,” Proetta said. “But in a few counties like you could face some serious charges.”

A spokesperson for Rogers, Ark.,-based Daisy, told FoxNews.com that while the company disagrees with BB gun regulations like that seen in New Jersey, the company makes every effort to uphold the law.

“In our opinion and the federal government’s, our products are not firearms as there is no combustion in the chamber,” Daisy spokesman Joe Murfin said. “While we disagree, we respect a state’s law for whatever reason they may have one.”

Vatican Bank Scandal — JP Morgan, HSBC Cease Doing Business with Vatican

by Sonya Sandage

An 11-month Financial Times investigation reveals mismanagement at Vatican Bank

Many do not realize that the Vatican manages a banking empire with approximately $7 Billion in assets.

On June 28th, a Vatican cleric, along with a former Secret Service agent, and a financial broker were all arrested by Italian police and charged with fraud and corruption. The three were suspected of smuggling $24 Million by private plane across the border from Switzerland.

Prosecutors allege that the the Vatican cleric who is a former banker, was using the Institute of Religious Works (The formal name for the Vatican Bank) to transport money for Naples businessmen. In Italy, Naples is considered the base for organized crime. The arrested Vatican cleric was also the head of accounting at the Treasury of the Vatican (Administration of the Patrimony of the Holy See.)

This is another shock to Italy following upheaval of Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation in February, the first time in 700 years a pope has resigned. The scandal gave the Bank of Italy under Mario Draghi as well as BIS in Brussels the impetus it needed to start investigations and potential regulatory changes at the Vatican Bank.

Cardinals elect new pope

DAMAGE CONTROL

In July, Peter Sutherland, a non-executive chair at Goldman Sachs International, and the former Attorney General of Ireland, flew to the Vatican. He is a practicing Catholic and unpaid consultant to the Vatican’s Treasury, and was invited by reformers inside the Church to speak to the Council
of Cardinals, the most senior advisors to the Pope. He did not give a public statement, but two who were aware of the closed door proceedings indicate he advised the Council, “Transparency is necessary.”

Regulators have already been eager to get into the Vatican before the arrests. “We cannot have any more scandal. It is so shameful,” a senior member of the Vatican’s financial administration said.
Financial Times interviewed two dozen bankers, lawyers, regulators, and Vatican insiders over 11 months to understand how the Vatican Bank has unnerved bankers, regulators, and governments across Europe and the U.S. The reforms inside Vatican Bank now underway are due to pressure from banks like Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan, HSBC, and UniCredit, all who have found themselves as targets of regulators due to their business relationship with the Holy See.

REGULATORY NIGHTMARE, BANKING STANDARDS NOT MET

About 32 of the world’s largest financial institutions were “correspondent” banks for the Vatican. They moved about $3 Billion per year from the Vatican Bank to other banks around the globe, allowing the Church to conduct international business. The banks became so fearful of being tarnished by the Vatican that some have even closed down their accounts for the Embassies of the Vatican. HSBC did cease doing business with the Embassy of the Vatican, and other large banks are considering the same. Regulations and oversight around diplomatic bank accounts and PEP’s (politically exposed persons) has become crushing to the banks, and they no longer seek out these customers. Banks have tremendous surveillance around account owned by those who work high up in any government, especially embassy accounts. It is a large cost and risk to the banks, and they loathe doing business with these customers.

In March 2012, JP Morgan closed the bank accounts it held for the Vatican because the documentation provided was not thorough. Vatican was asking JPM to move money all around the world for it via wire transfers but the basic Know Your Customer data could not be obtained. When JPM would say, “we need to answer to the regulators on these wire transactions” the Vatican Bank would push back and say, “We answer to God,” according to a bank
manager at a large European bank.

MONEY FUNNELED TO EFFECT POLITICAL CHANGES, EVADE TAXES

Many bankers, lawyers, and those in business with the Vatican Bank would not speak on record but they did say the Vatican Bank operates unlike any other bank they’ve dealt with. The staff of only 12 were not versed in Due Diligence or KYC (Know Your Customer) standards. There was very little documentation on their cash flows and balances of approximately 19,000 clients. There are 33,000 accounts held at the Vatican Bank. 50% of clients come from religious orders, 15% are from Holy See institutions, 13% are Cardinals, Bishops, and clergy, 9% are from dioceses around the world. The rest have some affiliation with the Catholic Church. The Vatican Bank doesn’t have many loans, the books contain mostly deposits, wire transfers, and investments.

Many of the deposits are donations and cash tithe. 25% of the bank’s business is done in cash. Laura Pedio, a Milan ani-Mafia prosecutor who specializes in white collar crime, was willing to speak on the record to Financial Times. In her previous cases she found a complex system of proxies, with transaction authorization given to the third parties on behalf of unidentified account holders. The proxy holders had no details

recorded at the bank. Some of the proxies could only be verbally recognized by a few people at the Vatican Bank. She said there was no way to get answers on who these people were, or who was the final beneficiary of the account.

One advisor to the Vatican says the new clampdown by regulators has caused the correspondent banks to toss aside the Vatican and stop doing business with them. “There is a no nonsense approach from the correspondent banks,” the advisor said in an interview. “We are not here to cover the ass of the Vatican.”

The most infamous story so far around the Vatican Bank was their relationship withe a large Italian bank that collapsed. The Vatican Bank was the single largest shareholder in Banco Ambrosiano. After that bank collapsed, it’s chairman was found hanged under London’s Blackfriar’s Bridge. Prosecutors in Rome conclude the bank chairman was killed by the Sicilian Mafia but no charges were brought up against an individual. There have been rumors that the Vatican is a large shareholder of Bank of America but this has not been substantiated.

Mafia victim & bank chairman: Roberto Calvi

Another question is how the Vatican may funnel money into political actions. Pope John Paul II is said to have used the Vatican Bank to channel money to Poland’s Solidarity Movement. Questions arise as to is and how the Vatican may be swaying elections or effecting political change worldwide.

Regulators have been cracking down on tax cheats in offshore havens like Switzerland.

FIRST POPE IN 700 YEARS RESIGNED IN FEBRUARY, NEW POPE WITH MAMMOTH PROBLEMS TO FIX

As of March 2013 their new Pope, who is a Jesuit evoking poverty and humility, set a new tone on financial correctness. The new Pope spoke out against the idolatry of money, “all-compassing corruption,” and “Tax evasion that had reached global dimensions.” The new Pope moved his personal residence away from the Apostolic Palace and the Vatican Bank.

The new Pope has issued papal decrees to help speed inspections and make changes to produce real reform in the legal and institutional framework of their banking system.

School: Lil’ Wayne is fine, but Jesus is not

A middle school student in Kansas who wanted to promote a “See You At the Pole” prayer event was barred from doing so because the fliers she posted in the school had “illegal” Bible verses, according to a federal lawsuit.

Officials at Robert E. Clark Middle School in Bonner Springs confiscated and destroyed the fliers the student had already posted, attorney Matt Sharp alleged.

Sharp, an attorney with the Alliance Defending Freedom, filed the lawsuit against the Unified School District No. 204 last week on behalf of the seventh grade girl, known in court documents as “KR.”
The school allows a variety of other posters to be displayed – including one promoting a popular rapper. A poster of Lil’ Wayne posted contained the words “Good Kush and Alcohol,” the lawsuit alleges.
“Public schools should encourage, not shut down, the free exchange of ideas,” Sharp said. “The law on this is extremely clear: School policies cannot target religious speech for exclusion. The First Amendment protects freedom of speech for all students, regardless of their religious or political beliefs.”

In September the student posted fliers to promote a “See You At the Pole” rally. The event was part of a national day of prayer when students gather around the flagpole of their school at the beginning of the day to pray for the school, students and staff.

Some of the fliers included Bible verses referencing John 3:16 and Romans 5:8 – two well-known passages of Scripture in the New Testament.

The student posted the fliers in hallways at the school on Sept. 20. Later that night, she returned to the school for a dance and was confronted by Chellie Bonebrake, a school counselor.

The lawsuit alleges that Bonebrake “forcefully” told the girl that the fliers were “illegal” because they were a “violation of the separation of church and state.”

“The child was humiliated in front of her friends,” the lawsuit alleges.

After the confrontation, the fliers were taken down and destroyed by school officials.

The following week, the girl tried to hand out materials inviting students to the prayer gathering, but became afraid because of the “likely consequences if she was caught,” according to the lawsuit.

Neither Bonebrake nor Rick Moulin, the principal of the middle school, returned my calls seeking comment.

Dan Brungardt, superintendent for the Bonner Springs/Edwardsville schools, said Monday he had not seen or heard about the lawsuit.

He also said the district had not received any complaints from parents or students about anything regarding posting fliers before the prayer event.

Brungardt said the event was announced over the school's intercom system.

"We can't encourage students to go, but we did announce it," Brungardt said.

The district has a policy prohibiting distribution of religious materials on school grounds because "different entities request to distribute information to students constantly. If all entities who requested were allowed it would be disruptive to the school environment," Brungardt said in an email.

Sharp said that policy is a violation of the First and 14th Amendments as well as the Kansas Preservation of Religious Freedom Act.

“Students do not shed their constitutional rights at the schoolhouse gate,” he said. “Non-disruptive, private student expression is protected by the First Amendment. Religious speech is fully protected by the First Amendment.”

The school allows a variety of other posters to be displayed – including one promoting a popular rapper. A poster of Lil’ Wayne posted contained the words “Good Kush and Alcohol,” the lawsuit alleges.

Doug Bonney, legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas, said he was not familiar with the lawsuit, but he questioned whether the counselor had the authority to stop the student from handing out the fliers. Bonney said the school could be faulted if the student's posters were singled out because of their content.

"If in fact the school did prohibit the student from posting a religious message because it was religious, where a secular message would be allowed to stay up ... then the school might have some problems," Bonney said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
