President Obama prepares his State of the Union Address and the nation
looks forward to a Presidents Day holiday, Americans should consider the
warning examples of our worst chief executives. While few of Washington
and Lincoln’s successors could hope to replicate their epic
achievements, every president can — and must — focus on avoiding the
appalling ineptitude of John Tyler, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan and
their feckless fellow travelers on the road to presidential perdition.

When
President Obama’s hour-long State of the Union address was over Tuesday
night, three basic questions lingered surrounding his list of
incentives and partnerships and “we can get this done!” admonitions.
First, did the speech help propel his agenda through Congress? Second,
did it mobilize Americans in large numbers to get behind an Obama vision
for a second term? And third, did it help the president organize his
executive branch around ideas that can be sustained for four more years?

More
than 600 opponents of New York's new gun-control laws rallied Tuesday
at the state Capitol, vowing to disobey the firearms restrictions signed
last month by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and push for their repeal. The
protesters were a manifestation of the pushback against the gun laws the
Democratic governor shepherded to passage quickly in January, following
the Newtown, Conn., school shooting. His approval ratings, once above
70%, have dipped in recent weeks, and he has been the target of
increasingly harsh attacks from Republicans.
