Ron Paul supporters urge backers to ‘show up in force’ in Nebraska

This weekend will be Ron Paul’s last opportunity to get the delegates he needs to qualify for a presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention in August.
Mr. Paul already has a plurality of delegates from Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, Iowa and Louisiana.  Now Mr. Paul needs a plurality of support from Nebraska’s 32 delegates in the last state to hold its convention for delegates.
Accordingly, Ron Paul supporters are planning their grassroots efforts to make sure this weekend’s convention goes as well as possible for their candidate.  According to The Daily Paul, Mr. Paul’s supporters have laid out a three-step plan that uses their successful planning in Maine as a template.
The plan is this: First, meet up the night before to get everyone on the same page about who to vote for, including the convention chair.  Second, get to the convention several hours ahead of everyone else to avoid being caught in line during registration. Third, vote for the convention chair.
The Daily Paul writer says “Stay sharp and show up in force!”  The writer then orders Mr. Paul’s supporters to make sure that the convention chair is put up for a vote, and tells them to make sure voting machines are not used to count delegate votes.
Mitt Romney became the presumptive GOP candidate in late May when he secured the 1,144 delegates needed for the nomination.  While Mr. Paul stopped actively campaigning in May, he is continuing to run as a presidential candidate to advance his platform at the Republican National Convention.
In an interview with CNN, he explained his actions: “It certainly isn’t for the reason of disrupting the convention,” Mr. Paul said.  ”I’m in it for very precise reasons: to maximize our efforts to get as many delegates as we can. I’m still a candidate, and to promote something that is very, very important, that is a change in the direction for the Republican Party.”
According to Sioux City Journal.com, Nebraska GOP Executive Director Jordan McGrain says he will, for the first time, hire security for the convention.  Mr. McGrain is preparing to quell disputes between Mitt Romney supporters and Ron Paul supporters, who have clashed at other state conventions.  Disputes between supporters of the two candidates have resulted in shouting matches, brawling and — in Louisiana — delegates being carted off by police.
Paul supporters are also gearing up for the convention in Tampa, Florida. On August 26, Paul supporters will celebrate the former Air Force surgeon’s libertarian campaign platform by holding a festival with music, entertainment and speakers. Although the Texas congressman won’t attend the festival, he’ll be speaking at his own rally several miles away.
“I want to thank everyone who has been interested, involved in planning to come to Tampa because this is a very important event for us … The whole reason why we’re in this is because of a very important message,” Mr. Paul told his supporters in a video message posted to his campaign website.
The Texas Republican’s message has taken root among youth voters, who see Mr. Paul as the libertarian alternative to Governor Romney. The congressman’s upcoming rally and the supporter-led Paul Festival will be a testament to the popularity of his message.
